  • Quaid-e-Azam Medical College (QAMC), Laique (guest) wrote 18 years ago:
My father A. R. Hye had designed this campus. At the time of inception it was a very challenging proposition. Although he had designed many colleges, added building to many medical colleges, designed hospitals it was the first Medical Campus to be designed from ground zero by a Pakistani Architect. I remember as a child seeing him work on this project for endless hours. Being the first indigenously designed Medical Campus by a Pakistani Architect it has the characteristics typical in A. R. Hye's style of architecture. During those days air-conditioning was not common. The design of the building incorporates natural climate control features, such as cross-ventilation, strategic placement of windows, and overhangs and courtyards to create shade. Additionally, the roof vaults, besides providing insulation, also allow the flow of air through the vault roof, bringing down ceiling temperatures. Hollow walls also provide insulation. As a child I saw many sketches of it and later saw pictures of the finished structure. I would like to get a hold of some pictures of how it currently looks like and present them to my father. He will be happy to see them.
